Week 9 Results

(click on map to enlarge)

WOW! Some teams took advantage of the no-mile limit this week and sped across the country. Greased Lightning (6305) surpassed She-Power (6120) for the lead! Interestingly, they made it to Prairie du Chien, WI. This is Monica's hometown and she's the captain of the team. What a great coincidence! She-Power is still in Iowa just passing through Des Moines, trying to catch up with the new leader. Team Alpha (5410) barely retained their 3rd place spot as The Atalantas (5410) kicked it in high gear and almost surpassed them. Hopefully Team Alpha and Team Atalantas keep up the fight as we go into this last week of the challenge. Losing a little steam this week, The Racing Rhetoricians (4560) are just outside of Las Vegas; hopefully they don't get slowed down by the ring of the slot machines! Finally, Git 'er Done (3075) is chugging along nicely. They've made it into Texas and will hopefully soar over to Arizona this coming week.

Last week, gang! Next week we'll crown some team the winner!! It's only 1400-ish miles away for Greased Lightning. Given they had almost 900 miles this week, it's not unreasonable to think they could make it all the way back to RI!

Week 8 Results

(click on map to enlarge)

After 2 months of intense racing, we're only 2 weeks away from a crowned winner. This week teams worked hard and improved their standings! She-Power has continued to hold its lead over Greased Lightning, but just barely! She-Power made it to the Nebraska border this week, while Greased Lightning is just a few miles behind in Laramie, Wyoming! Team Alpha, the Atalantas, and the Racing Rhetoricans are all vying for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th spots. This week, Team Alpha made it all the way to the Mojave National Preserve. Hopefully they don't spend too much time enjoying the gorgeous scenery. Not far behind are the Atalantas who are in Victorville, CA, and working hard to keep up are the Racing Rhetoricans, who are just outside of Riverside, CA. Get 'er Done must be loving the midwest because they've been hanging out there for the last few weeks. Right now, they are just about 50 miles outside Tulsa (Betsy's hometown!). Hopefully next week, they'll pass right through OK and push their way into Texas!

Only 2 weeks left of this fierce competition! Keep racing your hearts out! Next week, there are no limits on how many miles a team can go, so be sure to count every mile!

Week 7 Results

(click on map to enlarge)

Update: Due to a math miscalculation, we have a shift in the standings. It seems ShePower is still on top with 4875 miles, but Greased Lightning is really close behind with 4737.5 miles! Less than 14 real-life miles separate these two teams! It's still anyone's race!

Wow! You've all been amazing the last two weeks. I'm back from vacation (amazing!) and impressed with all the teams!

In the last two weeks, Greased Lightning has regained the lead and is just outside Provo, UT. They completed 4917.5 miles and is more than 1/2 way to the finish line! But don't discount She-Power! They are not far behind in Filmore, UT. They've covered 4875 miles and don't show signs of slowing down. In the last two weeks, Alpha has also gained the lead over the racing rhetoricians! They're outside of Victorville, CA (after covering 4100 miles!) while the Racing Rhetoricians are on their way to Lake Havasu. The Atalantas had a clerical error, resulting in a 100 mile gain! They're not far behind the RR as they stop in Flagstaff, AZ for the night. Last, but not least for sure, Git 'er Done is not far from Betsy's hometown of Tulsa, OK. They're just outside of Joplin as they work their way through the midwest.

We only have a few weeks left of the competition! This is the last week we have any mile restrictions! So work hard to reach your goals!!

Week 5 brings two teams to Arizona! She-Power is close to Lake Havasu! I hope they get a chance to swim in the huge lake. But they shouldn't stay too long because Greased Lightning isn't far behind and hankering to get back their lead! Still fighting to maintain their 3rd place lead is Racing Rhetoricians. They're spending time in Amarillo, TX, but JUST behind them is Team Alpha!! Alpha is SO close to passing into 3rd place. Finally, the Atalantas have left Git 'er Done in the dust! They've made their way to just outside Tulsa while Git 'er Done is just outside Warnecke's hometown in Illinois!

Good job teams. We're almost all the way across the country. Next week I bet at least one team will be making the turn in California and headed back east!

Week 4 Results

(Click on map to make larger)

Week four brought an upset to the leading team! Team She-Power moved into first place and is taking a short rest in Armarillo, TX!! Also in Texas is Greased Lightning, hanging out on the border of TX and Oklahoma (home state of Betsy!). Both teams Racing Rhetoricians and TASACDWS are taking a nice hike in Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri. This team is only 5 miles apart!!! Next week there could be another upset. Watch out, Racing Rhetoricians! Finally, the Atalantas took a decent lead ahead of Git 'er Done. The Atalanta's are just outside Mandestor, TN, while Git 'er Done is enjoying the beauty of Arabi, GA.

We've been at this a month so far, gang, and I can't believe how fun it's been! I love the competition of it all. So keep going. Work hard, and push yourselves this week!

Week 3 Results

(Click on map to enlarge)

The race is really heating up and the teams seem to be in three distinct areas. Greased Lightning STILL has the lead with 2095 miles. They're resting comfortably in a little town called Marion, IL. Not far behind is She-Power, who checked in in Paducah, KY. I've spent some time on the lake there, and I'm sure She-Power is enjoying it while they gear up to try to take the lead. Not far back are two teams: Team Alpha and Team Racing Rhetoricians. The Racing Rhetoricians are just a little ahead in Dalton, GA while Team Super is only 20 miles behind them in Adairsville, GA. Finally, our last two teams are close to each other too. Team Git 'er Done has made it to the boarder of South Carolina and the Atalantas are just headed of them in Yulee, FL.

Go teams! This week could be a week of upsets as teams 1, 3, and 5 are very close to being overtaken by teams 2, 4, and 6!! Keep working hard. I hope y'all are seeing results of your increased exercise!

The race continues and Greased Lightning is still in the lead. But not far behind them is She-Power, who has stopped off in Orlando. I hope they don't have too much fun on the rides this week. They're only about 120 miles behind the leaders. Also making it to Florida this week are the Racing Rhetoricians who has stopped for the night in Jacksonville, FL. Hopefully, they won't rest too long because Team Alpha... is only 85 miles away! Finally, the two teams who are taking in NC (and who can blame them!) are The Atalantas and Get 'er Done. Hopefully both those teams will move past the beautiful North Carolina scenery next week!

Good job this week, racers! I wonder how the midwest will feel next week as our teams head toward Belleville, IL and Tulsa, OK!

(click map to make it bigger)

First week is complete! Good job everyone! The race began in Westerly, RI, birthplace to Holly, Julie B, and Jenni!

Here's where the teams have ended up after a week of racing:

Greased Lightning has a good lead with 750 miles. They've landed in High Point, NC! Not far behind are two teams: She-Power (with 570 miles) and Racing Rhetoricians (510 miles). She-Power is resting for the night in Lynchburg, VA--home place of racer Stacie Dusetzina--while Racing Rhetoricians have paused in Verona, VA. A few miles back is the team with the longest name ever: Team Alpha Super Awesome Cool Dynamite Wolf Squadron in Mt. Jackson, VA (470 miles). Hanging out near the Baltimore (and maybe checking out /The Wire/ filming sites) are The Atalantas (396 miles). Finally, Get 'er Done is regrouping in beautiful Wilmington (260 miles).

Greased Lightning has laid down the gauntlet for the rest of the teams! They're 180 miles ahead of the 2nd place team, but not so far ahead that someone can't catch up next week!

REVISION: Team Alpha Super.... has advanced to 2nd place with 600 miles!
Keep up all the good work!

Posting Miles

Hi all,

When your team captain posts miles, I suggest the following format to make things easier.

Title of post: Team Name Week X
Participant W: X miles
Participant X: X miles
Participant Y: X miles
Participant Z: X miles

Total miles: X miles
Total virtual miles: X*10 miles.

Also in the labels, put your team name and the week number so we can easily search through them.

Let me know if you have questions!

Race Course Map

(click map to make it larger)

Here's our race map. It goes from Oceanside, CA (home of Dalyn) in the west to Bristol, RI (home of Karen) in the east, to Prairie Du Chien, WI (home of Monica) in the north to Osceola, FL (home of Georgie) in the south!

Getting Started

Below is the email I sent to everyone to kick off the race:

WOO-HOO! I've heard from everyone and created teams for our Race Across America. In the (long) email below are the teams, the details of the race, the rules, the the "mile equivalents" and the blog information. I want to make sure everyone is comfortable with these details, so if you have any questions or suggestions for additions or deletions, please reply all to the list so we can adjust accordingly. The race will begin Monday, June 13th. That's in two days!!

Teams:

We will have 6 randomly selected teams of 4 people per team. To make things as fair as possible, I divided the participants up into people who have the summers "off" (aka teachers) and people who have fulltime jobs and/or kids. I then created the teams by randomly selecting the fulltime/kids people first and then the summers off people. So there should be a good balance of both on each team. The teams are as follows:

Team 1: Sarah B*, Mike, Georgie, Stacy

Team 2: Stacie*, Steve, Lesley, Jennifer Wh

Team 3: Sara*,Patrick, Dalyn, Jennifer Wa

Team 4: Jenny*, Julie G, Betsy, Holly

Team 5: Monica*, Chris, Julie B, Jessy

Team 6: Beth*, Karen, Kira, Jenni

I have put an (*) next to tentative team captains. These people will be responsible for initiating email contact (addresses in the "to" line above) for their groups the first time. After that, feel free to chose your own team captains. The team captain will be responsible for getting everyone's numbers each week and posting them to the blog. Also, each team will need a team name. Team captains can post that information on the blog.

Cost: $5. Please send me your $5 in the mail to Holly Ryan 105 Condor Ridge CT Audubon, PA 19403. The winning team will get all the money to split 4 ways, so that's $30 each, 7x your investment!

The Race:

The race course is a stop in each of your hometowns! I have plotted your hometowns on a map and created a course that stops in each town. The distance around the country is 7775 miles. See the blog for a picture of the race map!

Rules:

1. The challenge will begin Monday, June 13th. Starting on Monday, participants can begin earning miles for their team.

2. The length of the race will be 7,775 "virtual miles." Every one mile you complete or earn in real life will be equal to 10 virtual miles. The first team to collectively earn 777.5 miles (= 7,775 "virtual miles") will be declared the winner. The “race route” will be posted on the blog by Sunday, June 12th.

3. Participants earn miles by keeping track of how far they run, jog or fast-walk each week, or by performing an equivalent exercise (see below). Note: for this challenge, only fitness walking (i.e., walking specifically for exercise) can be counted (as opposed to walking around a store, your house, etc.)

4. Each team will choose a team captain. Tentative captains are outlined above.

5. Team Captains are responsible for posting the team's total miles for the week on the blog. (Team members are responsible for reporting their individual miles to their team captain.)

6. Teams that do not post their miles by Monday 11:59 PM (ET) will be penalized 5 miles.

7. Holly will update the blog each week and indicate where each team is along the virtual route.

8. Until week 8 of the challenge, the maximum number of miles any one team member can earn per week will be 30 miles. After 8 weeks, there will be no restrictions.

9. At the end of the challenge, the first team to report that they have collectively earned enough miles to finish the race will be named the winner.

10. In the event that no team has "crossed the finish line" by 10:00 AM (ET) Monday, August 22, the team that is closest to the finish line will be declared the winner.

11. If you do not walk or run your miles, you can earn equivalent miles in the following ways: Moderate activity (and strength training) = 2 miles per hour; and Intense activity = 4 miles per hour. See suggested definitions and activities below.

1 hour moderate-intensity activity= 2 mile. Doing these activities means you're working hard enough to raise your breathing or heart rate and break a sweat. One way to tell is that you'll be able to talk, but not sing the words to your favorite song. Examples of this might include: Water aerobics, riding a bike on mostly level ground, water skiing, dancing, playing doubles tennis, recreational canoeing or kayaking, yard word (such as pushing a lawn mower), certain types of yoga.

1 hour of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity= 4 miles Doing these activities means you're breathing hard an fast and your heart rate has gone up quite a bit. If you're working at this level, you won't be able to say more than a few words without pausing for a breath. These activities might include swimming, riding a bike fast or on hills, playing singles tennis, competitive sports (soccer, basketball), aerobic dancing/kickboxing, rowing, jumping rope, etc.

The Blog:
We have a blog called 2DGreesofSeparation.blogspot.com named as such because I know everyone personally in the group except Mike, even though I've heard a lot about him! Yeah, it's a little convoluted but all the other names were taken! Right now the blog is naked, but I'll start putting up things after I complete this email.
